Archives are a great source of information, and help us further understand our history as a community. The Greeley History Museum has just launched their first online database of historic images that are available to the public.
The images have been donated by various individuals, and include pictures of agricultural architecture, choirs, and farm equipment.
There is something very unique about these images. This might sound corny, but I really enjoy the ways in which this database shows every day working class folk.
While corporations tend to exploit minority groups, these images uplift them. They are depicted as the American dream, something to aspire to.
The images are everyday folk immersing themselves in this culture this vibrant and rich. There is one titled, “Men studying Hispanic baseball team story boards.” There is just something about the way in which they are posed which presents them so well.
Another favorite image of mine is an image of a woman at Glenmere park back in 1939. There are geese in the background and there is only one house in a sight. Something really telling of how much Greeley has expanded.
Images like these are crucial in understanding why Greeley is the way it is. Especially in our modern age, visual representation of our town can easily be discussed.
